Vehicles are made for a purpose that is to move from location a to b. By it's journey from its invention to present day, it has been evolving
From standard self powered spinning wheels to smart computerized mechanical machined. There are now two wheels drive ( front wheels and rear wheels ), four wheels drive, all wheels drive and driverless along with their advantages and disadvantages. Each with their own purpose. Drive wheels or drivetrain is a mechanical movement that spin the wheels to move the car.
Short story, here I want to write about the the difference in driving off road and on road which is related to the type of drive wheels.
Driving in most common view is driving a vehicle from one location to another via roads. Roads condition are depend on the location of a place. If the place is a city or town, the roads are considered as smooth and paved. If the place is in rural area, they are considered as muddy, graveled, potty, etc. Hence the term off road became blur.
So before talking about how to drive on road and off road, better know first about the terms.
For me, as long as the road has it's shape then I'll call it a road. No matter if it is paved, gravel, muddy, it's still a road. If it's not in shape of a road then it's not a road.
So driving on road is driving on the roads with various surfaces while driving off road is driving on various surfaces outside the roads.
Okay, I don't intend to make you confuse but let's shrinking the terms a bit simple. So on road is a common smooth road that is easy to be passed by any type of vehicles while off road is a road or not a road at all that is almost impossible to be passed by standard vehicles.
If driving on road is drivable by any type of vehicle and any type of driver, then let us just skip about it.
Now if you meet a situation that forced you to drive out of a road, then you need to know how to drive on that surfaces, that is off road driving. If your vehicle came standard with a four wheel drive system, all terrain tyres, skid plated, then you are okay to proceed driving. If your vehicle is a standard two wheel drive, then you need to learn how to drive off road. Here is the real challenge of driving off road. Note that 4x4 vehicles are made to face off road driving, it's not recommended to drive off road with standard two wheels drive.
So this is about if you are forced to drive off road with standard two wheels drive vehicles.
What you need to do:
First, you need to obverse, see if you could pass through that surface, your observation is required.
Tips: front wheels drive vehicle has less advantage over rear wheels drive. It's not recommended to face steep terrains.
Second, make sure. Are you sure you could pass that steep, flood, muds, or sand?
Third, now that you are sure then drive ahead. Hence you need to prepare to jump off of the car if the vehicle get stuck or worse, mishandled.
Now if you are so obsessed to drive off road then continue to read...
Fourth, handling. Any obstacles need different handling to operate the vehicle. If you are on muds, and your vehicle is front wheel drive then you need to drive fast ( not furious ) and keep the car moves, and if you are on rear wheels drive, drive slower and try to align your steering towards your direction. If you meet a steep terrain, drive fast from the start, if you are on front wheels drive vehicle, better drive it in reverse. If you are on gravel or sand, you need to drive slower and keep the car moves. Just remember, do not let the car stopped, especially on waters. Once you stop, you need to prepare to walk home or phone a towing service. If you are on stoney roads or uneven dry roads you need the stop, go and reverse style.
Fifth, third party. If you have companions then you are okay. They are needed in case you get stuck, to give you a little push, phisically and mentally. If you are on your own, then try to find some help nearby ( if any ).
Sixth, post a comment. If you successfully drive off off road with a standard vehicles, then post your comments here. Remember, if you fail, do not post. I'm not responsible for the embarrassment.
Last, drive wisely. Your vehicle is supposed to take you from one place to another safely, do not try to abuse it without proper mods. Unless you are a pro.
